According to the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC), medical coding is ‘the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services, and equipment into universal medical alphanumeric codes.
The main task of medical coders is to review clinical statements from records such as transcription of physicians’ notes, laboratory and radiologic results, etc, and assign standard codes using Current Procedure Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases Clinical Modification 10 (ICD-10-CM), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Level II classification systems. They help the medical billing process by creating a claim to be paid by insurance carriers.
